SUMMARY:Monthly POCs for Racial Justice Calls: 3rd Tuesdays
DESCRIPTION:NABA offers monthly opportunities for POC Buddhists for racial justice to gather. This multi-lineage container provides nourishment\, solidarity-building\, probes into larger questions\, and action-oriented committees couched on the teachings of the Buddha. These calls are consistent opportunities where POC Buddhists for racial justice across North America may be relieved of the burden of having to explain racism to others and simply be accepted\, as together we explore justice issues and resolutions in our personal and global spheres. POC Buddhists across traditions have something unique to offer race relations at micro and macro levels too. \nRegular calls every 3rd Tuesday of the month starting at 11:30 AM PST / 2:30 PM EST.\nThe next call will be February 20th. \nRegister for upcoming 2018 calls here:\n February 20 -- An Exploration.\nWe will consider questions such as the following:\n-Are fight and flight the only options in the face of injustice?\n-What Dharma-based resolutions have you tried or would like to try?\n-And what happened or resulted when you did try?\n-Explore silence as a solution vs. being silenced as an injustice. \nMarch 20 -- Peace and Social Action.\nCoinciding with NABA's multi-lineage racial justice webinar by Katie Loncke of Buddhist Peace Fellowship and co-presenter from another community\, please join all interested in racial justice on this date. \nApril to December \nDr. Kamilah Majied\, Jennifer Hawkins\, and Guo Cheen are helping with the facilitation of these calls. Please join us: \n\nTo Heal: To recognize and repair internalized oppression and its impact on our relatedness as a diverse body of practitioners of color. We need time together to apply our practice towards discovering more personally who we are as a diverse body of color.\nTo Discover: To know who Practitioners of Color are as a diverse body\, recognize the integral roles we play in the broader spiritual community\, discover how we currently enhance racial equity\, leverage resources\, and form natural collaborations.\nTo Bridge: This call invites us to explore how we align our energies in ways that bridge racial separation between historically divided communities of color. Many of us also seek to reconcile and collaborate with white practitioners\, allies\, and institutions without causing or experiencing harm.\nTo Justice: We call practitioners of color to humbly recognize our interdependence across the very systems which perpetuate the vestiges of our exploitation/enslavement\, including economic\, healthcare\, educational\, environmental\, transportation and legal systems controlling housing\, property and national borders. Of relevant concern to us is how racism relies on greed and class stratification\, the weight of which is not only ravaging the poorest communities of color but also rapidly destroying the planet.\n\nSee you every 3rd Tuesday of the month!

SUMMARY:Nichiren Service and Dharma Talk
DESCRIPTION:During our morning Service on Sundays\, we chant portions of the Lotus Sutra and also chant the Odaimoku (Namu Myoho Renge Kyo). This is a version of the normal daily service practiced by Nichiren Shu practitioners at home. The chapters from the Lotus Sutra are read in the traditional way (Chinese characters with Japanese pronunciation) known as Shindoku. Shindoku literally means faith reading and is a form of meditation in itself; thus\, it is not necessary to understand the meaning of the text while we are chanting. We also regularly chant the Sutra in English to develop our understanding. Our Daily Service usually lasts about 40 minutes to 1 hour. The mokusho (wooden drum)\, seen below\, is used by the leader during chanting to help keep the beat. \nhttp://www.nichiren-shu.org/Houston/pages/services.htm

SUMMARY:7 Day Sesshin -- 9/28 to 10/5
DESCRIPTION:Sesshins are extended periods of intensive\, silent zazen for experienced meditators. They are held in seclusion\, follow a rigorous schedule\, and last from three to seven days. Mitra-roshi conducts sesshins in New Mexico\, California\, and New Jersey. \nMountain Gate is a place of deep Zen Buddhist practice. If you are interested in joining us for sesshin or a longer or shorter period of intensive residential practice\, please write and tell us why\, what your practice history is\, and who you are. Because of the demanding and intense nature of sesshin\, only people who have been sitting regularly should apply. \nThere are many hours of formal zazen each day; informal zazen is encouraged during breaks and rest periods. Other elements of sesshin are walking meditation\, chanting\, prostrations\, work\, exercise\, and vegetarian meals. Sanzen (private instruction with Mitra-roshi) is offered twice a day\, and there are daily teisho (Zen talks by the Roshi). \nhttp://www.sanmonjizen.org/sesshin.html

SUMMARY:RECOLLECTIVE AWARENESS MEDITATION DAY-LONG WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is open to anyone interested in meditation. We will use an approach called Recollective Awareness Meditation\, based on a form of vipassana\, which involves meditating with our thoughts\, emotions\, and sensations rather than considering them distractions. Afterwards we will recollect and reflect upon what happened during the meditation sitting. This experiential process introduces beginners to a meditation practice that is gentle and friendly from the outset\, while it supports experienced meditators in bringing more awareness and compassion to their inner world. Please bring any sitting stuff you like; chairs & zafus are available. \nhttp://skillfulmeditation.org/SDmonthly2015.html

SUMMARY:Meditation Retreat for People of Color
DESCRIPTION:Meditation Retreat for People of Color\nWith Mushim Ikeda\, Bonnie Duran and Vance Pryor (Assistant)\nJune 16 - 21\, 2017 \n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\nIn many traditions\, people journey into the wilderness for contemplation and purification. How often do we have the opportunity to connect to our deepest intentions and to experience spiritual renewal? Taking place at 9\,000 feet in pristine meadowland in New Mexico\, the Vallecitos People of Color Retreat is designed to offer and support a practical introduction to insight meditation (vipassana). Meditation embodies the essence and wisdom of the teachings of the Buddha and has been the foundation of Buddhist teachings for 2\,500 years. It is a simple and direct practice. Meditation is extraordinary in its simplicity\, its lack of dogma and\, above all\, its results. This path to self-awareness can be successfully applied by anyone to their everyday lives. The ancient and profound teachings of interconnectedness and compassion are the foundations of spiritual awareness. \nThe retreat is based on the intensive training retreats that are traditionally the heart of Buddhist practice.  The daily schedule\, conducted in silence\, is comprised of group sitting periods alternating with walking meditation outdoors. There are group interviews with the teachers and a daily discourse from the teachings of the Buddha. In addition\, there will be opportunities for optional group hikes and mindful movement to allow practitioners to fully experience Vallecitos’ beautiful natural setting\, and to support physical joy and ease. Gourmet vegetarian meals add to the special nature of this retreat. To cultivate the meditation process\, please note that complete silence is maintained at all times throughout the retreat\, except during meditation practice interviews and the talks by the teachers\, which may be followed by a communal conversation. \nThis retreat continues the ground-breaking tradition established at Vallecitos over the past two decades. People of color come to the mountains\, the forest and the river not to conference\, network\, analyze or plan\, but to practice one of the world’s oldest and wisest contemplative traditions. For some\, the retreat may be the first extended period of meditation practice and practicing silence.  No previous meditation experience is required to participate and the retreat is suitable for individuals at all levels of practice. \n*This is a retreat for people of color.  If you do not identify as a person of color\, we are happy to help you find another VMRC retreat. \n\n\n\nTeachers\n\n\nMushim Ikeda\nMushim Ikeda-Nash is a meditation teacher\, community peace activist\, writer\, diversity facilitator\, and mother of a 27-year-old son. She has done both monastic and lay Buddhist practice over the past 35 years\, in the U.S.\, Canada\, Mexico\, and S. Korea. Her poetry\, fiction and essays have been published widely in journals and anthologies such as the Shambhala Sun\, Buddhadharma\, and Innovative Buddhist Women: Swimming Against the Stream. Mushim was coeditor of Making the Invisible Visible: Healing Racism in Our Buddhist Communities. Her work has been featured in two documentary films\, Between the Lines: Asian American Women Poets and Acting on Faith: Women and the New Religious Activism in America\,…\nLearn more about Mushim Ikeda\n\n\n\nBonnie Duran\nBonnie Duran\, PhD\, began Buddhist meditation practice 35 years ago. Bonnie attended the very first People of Color Mediation Retreat at Vallecitos decades ago and we are proud to have her sit on our Teachers’ Council today.  Bonnie enjoys teaching Spirit Rock’s Dedicated Practitioners Program\, short and long retreats at Spirit Rock and IMS\, and holds a People of Color and Allies Sangha in Seattle\, WA. She also directs the University of Washington’s Center for Indigenous Health Research. Listen to one of Bonnie’s talks: Mana (Conceit) and Skillful Means given at IMS on September 15\, 2012 – 53 minutes\, 32.3 MB (Download\, Stream)\nLearn more about Bonnie Duran\n\n\n\nVance Pryor (Assistant)\nVance Pryor\, PsyD\, began insight meditation in 1998. He has been deeply influenced by the teachings of Sayadaw U Pandita and Sayadaw U Tejaniya. He currently is being trained as a teacher by Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters.\nLearn more about Vance Pryor (Assistant)

SUMMARY:Launching of NABA
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nLAUNCHING OF THE FIRST NON-SECTARIAN NETWORK OF BUDDHIST GROUPS IN NORTH AMERICA \nAs a hub of support and for sharing resources\, North American Buddhist Alliance expects to encourage many collaborations among peace-loving Buddhists across the region. \nMarch 16\, 2016. (Seattle\, WA) Today\, North American Buddhist Alliance (NABA) launches its interactive website for Buddhists in the region so that the teachings of the Buddha may be even more skillfully shared and so that peace may result in the minds and social realities here. \nPresently no Buddhist network exists in North America. Given the rapid population growth of Buddhists and Buddhist groups on the North American continent\, a member-supported association that informs the public about the presence of various Buddhist groups and supports Buddhists in the sharing of resources or efforts toward collective action is an absolute necessity. \nNABA was founded with the support of a few dozen Buddhist teachers who lead groups in the United States and Canada. A small idea that began at the 2015 International Dharma Teachers’ Gathering grew to become an official nonprofit organization with an interactive website\, a quarterly e-newsletter\, and virtual and in-person opportunities for Buddhists to share ideas and event information\, to create joint initiatives and projects. \nReverend Guo Cheen\, one of the directors of the NABA Board\, points to the interdependent Indra’s Net integrated into the NABA logo\, “it represents the cohesion and cooperation possible\, both of which must happen to a certain degree to turn the wheel of the Dharma in the West.
